VILLAGE HOUSE CLOSES WOMEN’S SHELTER OPERATION
August 15, 2020
In light of the continuing spread of the virus and the uncertain future, Village House has made the difficult decision to close its shelter operation. Since March the intent was to temporarily suspend shelter operations in hopes of re-opening in early 2021. Unfortunately, the Village House model of staffing the shelter with large numbers of church volunteers, many over the age of 65, is looking less viable as the pandemic drags on.
The decision includes disbursement of operating funds to other non-profit organizations with the similar mission of serving the homeless through a series of grants for $5-10k. A subcommittee chaired by Vice-Chair Patrick O’Meara, will select grantees from mini-grant requests.
While most of Village House operations have been suspended, a small subcommittee of partner churches is exploring creation of a shower ministry for the homeless. The committee co-chaired by Mike Ferrero, Holy Spirit Church and James Moore, St. Timothy’s Lutheran Church.
Once again, thank you to all of our churches, donors and volunteers. Through your service and support for the past five years, Village House has been a beacon of hope to our many guests/clients!
God bless; Mike Ferrero, Village House Chairperson
